Senior Staff Attorney/Director of Alabama Education Initiatives

Marion Chartoff directs the SPLC’s education reform efforts in Alabama. In this role, she guides multiple campaigns to reform ineffective school discipline practices that push children out of school. She has also done significant work at SPLC and elsewhere on juvenile justice issues. Before joining the SPLC, she represented children charged with crimes in state and federal courts. She served as a staff attorney for the Southern Center for Human Rights in Atlanta, where she represented prisoners in cases challenging conditions of confinement. She also worked to reform Georgia’s indigent defense system. Chartoff is a graduate of Yale University and Stanford Law School.
